Senior Moving FAQs

At Brilliant Moves, we get a lot of questions about senior moving. Many clients and their families ask about our services, downsizing, move management, and what to expect from our process. These senior moving FAQs provide answers to some of the most common questions.

Let's Get Moving
  • What is a move management company?

Brilliant Moves is a move management company, which means we offer services in addition to what a typical moving company provides. For our senior clients, we will sort, pack, develop floor plans, manage the move, unpack, and set up the new home.

  • How long does the process take?

Depending on the size of the move, our process generally takes from one to three days. Typical moves take one day to pack and one day to move. We also assist with downsizing and donating, and we can provide references for estate sales, realtors, and trash disposal.

  • What kinds of moves do you do?

Our Brilliant Moves crew performs both external and internal moves.

In an external move, we pack and move a client from their current home, which can be a house, townhouse, condo, apartment, or even a senior community, into a new home. The new home is often in a senior community, but we also move clients to houses, townhomes, condos, and apartments. Our Brilliant Moves crew will sort, pack, and unpack, and we arrange for a third-party moving company to do the heavy lifting. This process usually takes 1 to 3 days from packing to completion, depending on the size of the move.

An internal move involves moving a client within a senior community. Sometimes clients will move to a larger or smaller apartment in Independent Living or to Assisted Living or Memory Care within the same senior community. An internal move is generally accomplished in one day, during which time our crew will pack, move, and set up the new home.

  • What should I do with things I’m not taking with me?

Most often, seniors will move into a smaller space. This is where downsizing comes in.

Downsizing  can be done before or after the move, and Brilliant Moves can help with this process. Strategies include giving things to family and friends, holding an estate sale, taking items to a consignment shop, and donating to charities.

  • How much does it cost?

When Brilliant Moves estimates the cost of a move, we consider the scope of the project and how many crew hours it will take to sort, pack up and unpack a household, and put away items. We also include the cost of the third-party movers, so everything is included in our estimate.

Our estimates are a cost range, as things can change during a move and affect the amount of time or supplies needed.

  • Do you only move seniors?

Seniors are the focus of our business. On occasion, we have moved a family member of one of our senior clients.

  • Do you move people out of state?

Brilliant Moves has packed and arranged for the moving of households and specific furniture items out-of-state. In addition, we have helped clients find interstate moving companies and POD delivery companies. Our crew has also assisted clients in moving to other locations within Minnesota and has unpacked and set up homes for clients moving in from other locations across Minnesota and other states.

  • What areas do you serve?

Since Brilliant Moves is a locally owned business, we are not limited to a specific geographic area the way a franchise might be. We can work with clients throughout the entire Twin Cities area.

  • What if I want to do my own packing?

Over the years, Brilliant Moves has found that some clients and their families want to do their own packing and unpacking. In those instances, clients typically only need a mover, not a move management company. If a client wants to do some of their packing or be more involved in the process, we can discuss ways to facilitate and expedite their move to get them settled more quickly than if they do it on their own.
